Pioneer’s had to hand make their own candles by dipping a wick in hot melted wax. This process had to be repeated many times until the candle became the size they wanted.
Pioneer Featherbed
This is a featherbed (feather tick mattress) suspended by hemp ropes for comfort. The ropes are visible hooked over pegs on the horizontal side and foot boards. There are drying cockscomb flowers hanging on the walls. There is a baby bed in the lower left corner and a doll bed under the small table to the left. There are hanks of yarn hanging from a bed post. A candle lantern hangs in the corner, with a candle holder on the wall next to it.
